What is Re-targeting and how does it work?

I often get asked that question and in short… Re-targeting is the ability to follow-up / advertise to people who have previously visited your website and either took an action or did not.

The reason you need to use it is pretty straight forward. There is an old but powerful saying among sales people and here it is…

The Fortune is in The Followup!

So, exactly what is Re-targeting and how does it work?

When you create an advertising account with companies like Facebook and Google you will get a script (piece of code) that you add to your website.

When someone visits your website, the script is loaded and their information is sent back to to the ad platform. The ad platform adds their information to a pre-designed re-targeting list.

Now, anywhere that person goes on the internet they are shown an ad based on their re-targeting profile.

You’ve most likely noticed this when you visited a product page online. For example, You look at a nice pair of shoes on a website and then leave. Within a few minutes and over the next few days you see ads for the same shoes on Facebook, Instagram, and other websites you visit.

Why Your Business Needs Re-Targeting.

As stated previously “The Fortune is in The Followup” Re-targeting an existing visitor has a much higher return on investment because they are already familiar with your product.

In fact, re-targeted ads are 76% more likely to get clicks on Facebook than normal ad campaigns.

And it’s not just consumer product websites that use re-targeting campaigns. Even B2B and service based companies deploy re-targeting when people visit their site.

Again, they visited your site and have shown interested in your product or service… so it only makes sense to follow-up with them right?

Re-targeting options

Re-targeting campaigns can be broad or specific to certain activities. For example, a few things you can re-target….

  • Visitors who arrived at a page and left without taking action
  • Visitors who started the conversion process by registering or abandoning a shopping cart.
  • Visitors who watched a video on your website
  • Visitors who viewed a specific page on your website
  • Visitors who made a purchase but did not upgrade to the higher plan
  • Visitors who filled out a form on your website and left their email address
  • Etc… The possibilities are endless

So… Whats Next?

The first thing would be to add re-targeting to your marketing efforts. We highly recommend hiring a professional to set this all up for you because it is a bit technical. However if you want to try it out on your own there is more than enough information online to study.

Whether you are currently running ads or not you should set up re-targeting to start building your list of visitors. This way when you are ready to run ads you will have a pre-made list of people who are familiar with your product or brand.
