In a nutshell, you pay popular sites like Google and facebook to display your ads.  Every time someone clicks on your ad you are charged a fee.

Utilizing Paid Advertising will generate a significant boost in your website traffic.  However there are a lot of factors to consider before shelling out the cash for advertising.

The first is determining your objective.  There are many different ad types and platforms that you can utilize to generate traffic.  A few of the ad objectives are as follows…

• Build your social media followers
• Generate Likes, Comments, Shares on Social media posts
• Get people to read a blog post on your website
• Get people to watch a video
• Sell a product or service
• Generate leads (Collect emails and / or phone numbers)

Once you establish your objective, The next thing is doing the research.  You can invest a thousand dollars on Google ads but if your customers are teenagers who spend the majority of their time on Instagram then you will essentially be throwing that money down the drain.

Research not only includes where you should be advertising but it also includes the type of content that your audience will be most likely to interact with.  Alternatively if your target customers are hanging out on different channels then a data driven test would need to be performed to determine which channel you should be focusing on the most.

The way these tests work are by spending an equal amount of money in ads across the different channels and then look at the data from each channel to determine the best one to advertise on.

The Next thing to consider is how you will followup with the people that visit your site.  If you don’t have a way to followup then you are again throwing your money down the drain.  One of my favorite followup methods is called re-targeting.

Essentially what happens is every time a new visitor goes to your site they are added to a history of visitors.  You can then setup custom online ads to be shown only to them.  These ads will be more personal than the initial ad they clicked on and it will remind them of your brand and encourage them to come back to your site.  The best part of these re-targeting ads is that they cost significantly less than the ad that brought them to your site in the first place.
